What It Is

The Hip Balancer is a 16 by 16 inch foam board with a white strip across it and two foam wedges on top. You lie face down on it for about 10 seconds, set up for whichever leg is short.

I invented it in 2009 for my own patients. Their hips would go back out between visits, and they had no easy way to fix that at home. So I made one. I glue and paint every one myself, here in Dripping Springs, Texas.

Watch Me Explain It

I explain how the Hip Balancer works, using a model of the spine.

Is It Right for You?

It's for you if one leg measures shorter than the other when you lie down. In my experience, that's a sign one hip has moved out of place.

It's not for you if:

  • both of your legs measure the same length
  • the pain comes from a bulging or ruptured disc

In either case it won't help, and I'd rather you didn't buy one.

How to Use It

  1. Find out which leg is short. Lie down and have a friend compare your heels, or ask your chiropractor.
  2. Lie face down on the Hip Balancer, set up for your short side. The instruction sheet shows you where.
  3. Stay there for about 10 seconds. Do it two or three times a day.

If your hips start to hold, you can cut back to once or twice a week.

Proper use of the Hip Balancer

Short RIGHT leg

For a short, right leg:

Lie down face down on the hip balancer, making sure that the left hip pointer, the bony part of the hip bone parallel to your belly button, hits the high block on the left side.

Short LEFT leg

For a short left leg:

Lie down face down on the hip balancer, making sure that the right hip pointer, the bony part of the hip bone parallel to your belly button, hits the high block on the right side.

You only need to use the hip balancer for 10- 20 secs.

It is unusual for the leg length to change from right to left or left to right. Usually it will stay the same. So once you determine which leg is short you can block the hips that same way. Periodically you can do the leg check just to make sure it's not switching. But that is rare.
